Frequently asked questions about constellations
This page provides concise answers to the most frequently asked questions about constellations — what they are, how they work, what is required for training, and what to look out for. Each answer is self-contained; details, videos, and research are found in the full encyclopedia articles linked from each response.
What is a constellation
What is a constellation?
A constellation is a method in which elements of a given system — a family, a business, an internal conflict — are represented by participants or symbols in space to make the hidden connections between them visible. The most widespread variant is the method of Bert Hellinger, known as family constellations. See Systemic constellations.
What does the word "constellation" mean?
The word has two meanings. In general Bulgarian usage, it denotes a combination or relative positioning of circumstances and forces acting together at a particular moment — from the Latin com- ("together") and stella ("star"). In psychology and systems work, the term denotes a method for visibly arranging relationships within a given system. See Systemic constellations.
What are family constellations?
Family constellations (in Bulgarian also called „фамилни констелации“) examine relationships between parents, children, partners, and several generations back to uncover an individual's place within their own family system. Participants often assume typical roles — "rescuer", "the strong one", "peacemaker". The central question is whether the position and role they occupy are truly theirs. See Family constellations.
Who is Bert Hellinger?
Bert Hellinger (1925–2019) was a German priest and psychotherapist who developed the family constellations method in the 70's and 80's of the twentieth century. Prior to that, he served as a Catholic missionary in South Africa; he later left the priesthood and turned to family therapy in Germany. His method has been inherited and further developed by numerous schools worldwide. See Bert Hellinger.
What books did Bert Hellinger write?
Eight titles by Bert Hellinger have been published in Bulgarian, all by the publisher "Zhanua 98". The most well-known is the unabridged edition "Orders of Love" (Bulgarian: „Закони на любовта“), while the shorter overview on the same topic is "Orders of Love: An Overview" (Bulgarian: „Законите на любовта. Обзор“). The remaining titles address healing, business success, and spiritual constellations. See Bert Hellinger.
Types and topics
What types of constellations are there?
In addition to family constellations, there are systemic/organisational, business, structural, and integral constellations, as well as more specialised forms — spiritual, meditative, written, and with objects. Each type can be conducted in a group or individually, in person or online. The method has continued to branch out after Bert Hellinger, following his own recommendation. See Types of constellations.
What are business constellations?
Business constellations apply the method to companies, teams, and partnerships — addressing topics such as clients, money, decisions, and the direction of business development. According to Prof. Dr. Stoyana Natseva, in a business context, a constellation helps one look at the system from the outside, in the same way that a family constellation reveals a person's role in their family lineage. See Business constellations.
What is a systemic constellation?
Systemic constellations is the broader name of the method, encompassing work with any type of system — not only family systems, but also professional ones. One branch is organisational constellations, developed by the psychiatrist Gunthard Weber based on the work of Bert Hellinger — for working with companies, teams, and organisations. See Types of constellations.
What topics are addressed in constellations?
The topics extend far beyond relationships with parents: partnerships, family patterns, money and success, business and marketing, choosing between options, internal conflicts, family roles, health, and future decisions. A session can also begin simply from a recurring question, without a previously clear root of the problem. See Topics in constellation work.
Conducting constellations
How does a constellation session work?
A session begins with the client's specific topic, proceeds through placing representatives (in a group format) or objects (in an individual format), observing positions, gazes, and distances, and concludes with a new perspective — not necessarily a ready-made answer. The constellation facilitator guides the process without rushing to explain or impose an interpretation. See How a constellation session works.
What is the difference between group and individual constellations?
In a group constellation, the system is represented by representatives — other participants; in an individual constellation, objects, figurines, or internal images are used, and the presence of the client's relatives is not required. The two formats differ in the tools used, not in the topics they can address. See Group and individual constellations.
Do online constellations work?
Yes — online constellations are conducted via video call, individually or in groups, using figurines, objects, or focused attention in front of the camera instead of in a shared room. According to Prof. Natseva, the intensity of the experience depends more on the topic, the individual's readiness, and the competence of the facilitator than on physical presence in the same room. See Online constellations.
Is a constellation possible without a specific question?
Yes — it is not mandatory for a participant to start with a precisely formulated problem. A general sense of dissatisfaction, tension, or a need for change is sufficient; the specific question sometimes emerges during the process itself. The condition that remains essential is a clear sense that something is amiss. See Constellation without a specific question.
What is the pre-constellation questionnaire?
Prior to many formats of constellation work, the participant typically undergoes brief preparation — completing a questionnaire or having a conversation with the facilitator to clarify facts about the family lineage and the system being worked with, such as early deaths or severed ties. The aim is to gather facts, not conclusions — interpretation remains part of the session itself. See Constellation without a specific question.
Training and profession
Do I need to be a psychologist to become a constellation facilitator?
No — a psychology degree is not a mandatory requirement, neither according to the standards of training schools nor legally, because "constellation facilitator", "psychologist", and "psychotherapist" are not regulated by specific legislation in Bulgaria. A background in psychology remains an advantage, but it does not replace training in the constellation method itself, and vice versa. See Do constellation facilitators need a psychology degree.
How long does it take to train as a constellation facilitator?
There is no universal duration because the profession is not state-regulated. At Happy Life Academy, the "Basics of Constellations" (Bulgarian: „Основи на констелациите“) programme includes 36 hours of practice and 22 video lectures across 18 sessions over approximately two months, with access to materials for 90 days. Other schools offer a different number of hours and formats. See How long constellation facilitator training takes.
How do I choose a good constellation facilitator?
A good constellation facilitator listens rather than imposing a predetermined narrative; maintains an active practice, engages in ongoing learning, and participates in supervision; recognises the limits of their competence; does not foster dependency; and provides a safe space in which the client can say no. A certificate from an organisation such as IAPTC® is a verifiable indicator, but not the sole criterion. See How to choose a constellation facilitator.
Where can I study constellations in Bulgaria?
Training is offered by several specialised schools rather than a single institution — they vary in format (in-person, online, blended), duration, admission criteria, certification awarded, and cost. Happy Life Academy offers the "Basics of Constellations" programme — 36 hours of practice, entirely online. Other schools range from short courses to three-year in-person programmes. See Where to study constellations in Bulgaria.
Cost
How much does a family constellation cost?
There is no uniform market price. Most schools and practitioners in Bulgaria publish only the price of their training — ranging from hundreds to several thousand EUR — rather than the fee for an individual client session. Where a session fee is published, it depends on the format: participating as a representative costs less than setting up one's own topic. See Cost of a constellation session.
Safety and research
Is it possible to feel unwell after a constellation?
Yes, it is temporarily possible for one's condition to feel worse before stabilising — heightened emotional agitation, fatigue, or sensitivity in the days following a session. This does not indicate an error in the process. However, severe or prolonged distress, acute anxiety, or insomnia require a doctor or psychotherapist — the method is not a substitute for medical or psychotherapeutic care. See Symptoms after a constellation and Systemic constellations#Research and limitations.
