How to choose a constellation facilitator
Choosing a good constellation facilitator depends not so much on diplomas and titles as on the way they work: whether they listen before deciding; whether they know the boundaries of their competence; whether they create a safe space. Prof. Dr. Stoyana Natseva, founder of Happy Life Academy, describes five specific indicators of a good constellation facilitator and one personal criterion of trust.[1]

Ability to listen
A good constellation facilitator does not enter a session with a ready-made solution and does not impose a specific narrative — for instance, that the problem definitely stems from the family's ancestral fate. Instead, they observe, ask questions, and allow the process to unfold naturally.[2] Eloquence, follower counts, and constellations recorded and posted online do not provide a genuine picture of the quality of their work — nor does the promise that a single meeting will resolve all problems in the client's life.[3]
Training and supervision
It is important not only which course the facilitator completed, but how much they practise and whether they continue to study. According to Prof. Dr. Stoyana Natseva, "it is important not only which course they completed, but how much they have practised and whether they continue to study" (translated from Bulgarian).[4] A good practitioner takes part in supervision and has a professional community and mentors to turn to in challenging cases.[5] The duration and depth of the training itself vary between programmes — see How long constellation facilitator training takes and Where to study constellations in Bulgaria; most courses in Bulgaria originate from the method of Bert Hellinger, but develop it in various directions.
Boundaries of competence
A constellation facilitator must recognise their own boundaries. A good practitioner does not present themselves as a psychologist, medical doctor, or psychotherapist without the relevant qualification, and knows when a given issue requires referral to another specialist.[6] This distinction is also important more broadly: a constellation is a format for self-discovery, not a medical or psychotherapeutic intervention, and does not replace specialist help for diagnosed conditions.
Avoiding dependency
A good constellation facilitator does not persuade the client that they must return every week, nor do they suggest that only they can help.[7] The goal of the work is for the client to become a more autonomous person, rather than more dependent on the constellation facilitator.[8]
Safe space
A safe space means that the client is able to refuse — to say no, to decline to step into a particular role, or to stop the process at any time if they judge that it is better for them.[9] No one is forced to share things they do not wish to disclose; the absence of this option is a warning sign.[10]
Certificate from IAPTC®
Training, supervision, and certification are indicators that can be verified — unlike a general impression from a facilitator's speech. The International Association of Professional Therapists and Coaches (IAPTC®) is a separate association, registered on 23.03.2021 with UIC 206444188, which certifies practitioners in several disciplines, including constellations; however, as of the verification date, the iaptc.eu website does not yet have a publicly accessible, searchable-by-name register of certified practitioners by discipline.[11] It is therefore sensible to verify the certificate directly with the training organisation or Happy Life Academy, rather than relying solely on a logo displayed on the facilitator's website.
Trust
Beyond verifiable indicators, there remains a more personal criterion — how one feels in the facilitator's presence. According to Prof. Dr. Stoyana Natseva, "not whether they impress you, not whether everyone tells you how good they are, but whether you can trust them without losing your own critical thinking" (translated from Bulgarian).[12] A good constellation facilitator does not tell the client what the truth about their life is, but helps them look at it from a place where they can see more for themselves[13]; the facilitator's values should align with the client's personal values, as it is the facilitator who will lead the session.[14]
